Bishop's University: Student Blog

From London to Lennoxville: Just DO IT!

Shaliny Pathmanathan, an exchange student from Keele University currently studying at Bishop's University in Canada, gives her insights into life at Bishop's University - our first university on our #aroundtheworldin80universities blog! Which can be found here.

Shaliny is a second year student studying for a dual honours in neuroscience with criminology.

We like to find everything we can about some of the specifics about studying overseas, so we thought we'd ask Shaliny a set of questions to find out more!

What made you decide to study overseas?

I wanted to experience a new culture and it was my dream to visit Canada.

What's been the biggest challenge for you so far.

Shaliny says that the deadlines are way more heavy compared to the UK with midterms and assignments due almost once a week, but manageable!

What have you enjoyed most about your university education so far?

Shaliny says that the smaller class sizes allows for more in depth discussions. You may remember we talked about this following our visit the Bishop's University in June of this year. Class sizes are really small at Bishop's. The entire university has been built with community in mind and therefore class sizes are small to ensure students get the best learning experience.

What advice would you give students back in the UK?

DO IT! For sure! It allows you to grow as a person and experience a different culture all at the same time. It is amazing to study in a different country with such different views on a lot of things, taking courses that interest me has been the highlight!

What have you enjoyed most about student life in your city?

Shaliny is currently living in Lennoxville, Quebec and said that the town is tiny with one local pub and a student union. You see the same faces almost all the time when you're out and the smaller community feeling is the best here at Bishop's. You don’t need the countless clubs and bars to have fun! The house parties are also very fun!

How would you summarise your experience in 3 words?

Adventure, personal growth and life-changing!

Thank you Shaliny for sharing your journey with us!
